Feeling Powerful with Power Tools

There is little in my adult life that has left me feeling more empowered and capable than getting comfortable with power tools. Let’s be honest; they’re loud and scary and can cause serious harm if used improperly. But, they’re also useful as hell and designing and building shit is fun.

I’ve wanted to learn how to work with wood and other materials for years. Conveniently, my boyfriend bought a house last year in need of major renovations and is also a builder of sorts by trade so he has the knowledge, tools, and patience to teach me. Sometimes life works out very nicely.

Together, we have taken on some really incredible projects. In this picture alone, we refinished the hardwood floors, designed and built the table and benches, and installed a masterpiece of a ceiling that neither of us will ever get over.

I’ve used saws, drills, nail guns, and orbital sanders. I’ve learned how to wire a switch, cut and install tile, build a porch, mix concrete, cut and install vinyl siding, and hang drywall. I’ve gotten saw dust in my eyes, paint in my hair, and accidentally high on polyurethane.

In other words, I’m having the time of my freaking life. I’ve always been drawn to working with my hands, but it wasn’t until recently that I was able to really exercise that creative muscle in such a useful way. I can’t wait to see what we do next.
